Company background

The company operates multipurpose terminals dedicated to the storage, unloading, warehousing and transshipment of liquid products such as fuels, lubricants, chemicals and biofuels. Established in several strategic ports across Europe (Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal), the company offers tailor-made logistics solutions adapted to a wide range of products: biofuels, base oils, marine fuels, lubricants and chemicals.

Filtration challenge

For a fire protection line, our customer wanted to clean the water network by installing a magnetic filter in order to eliminate particles resulting from corrosion of upstream steel pipes. The filter, equipped with PN16 flanges, had to be connected to a horizontal pipeline.

The operating conditions of the installation had to meet the following parameters:

  • Minimum filtration rating: 250 µm
  • Pressure: 8–10 barg
  • Network temperature: ambient
  • Flow rate between 0.08 m3/h and 1.5 m3/h
  • Filter connection via flanges

Pemflow filtration solution

As the inlet/outlet needed to be in line so that the filter could be easily integrated into the customer’s installation, we proposed a solution consisting of our CLI basket filter housing, combined with a CLI series inclined basket, fitted with a magnetic device with 4 magnetic rods.

Good to know

A magnetic rod filtration system operates by using candle-shaped filtering elements, often cylindrical, combined with magnetic fields. These rods are generally equipped with magnets rated at 3900 Gauss housed in a stainless steel sleeve to prevent oxidation; this allows them to attract and capture metallic particles present in the fluid. The magnetic field enhances filtration efficiency by retaining metallic impurities upstream of the basket filter, thereby extending its service life and delivering a cleaner fluid, for example in industrial applications where fluid purity is essential.

Filter housing

The selected filter housing is made of 316L stainless steel for all wetted parts. Sealing of the swing-bolt closure is ensured by a nitrile gasket (Viton or EPDM available on request). The inlet/outlet connections are DN 100 with type 11B flanges.

It should also be noted that TIG finishes ensure excellent chemical resistance for aggressive liquids.

Filter basket

Filtration is provided by a CLI series inclined basket. Filtration takes place from the inside to the outside, allowing contaminants to be retained inside the basket with no risk of downstream contamination. In this case, the filtration rating selected by the customer is 510 µm.

Good to know

Filtration ratings for this type of basket range from 5 µm to 10 mm.

In addition, the inclined basket incorporates a magnetic device with 4 rods.

Expert advice

Inclined basket filters are used in many industrial applications (mechanical & engineering industries, water treatment, chemical & petrochemical industries, food & pharmaceutical industries, HVAC & heating applications, marine & offshore applications) to protect equipment.

Thanks to its compact design, the inclined basket filter allows for a significant space saving in often constrained technical areas. Its inclination promotes improved fluid flow, limiting pressure losses and enhancing system efficiency. Another key advantage is its easy accessibility for maintenance, which reduces downtime and simplifies servicing operations.
