Conpany context
Our client uses fermentation processes to create alternatives to petrochemistry, helping to produce essential everyday products without oil, without pollution, with higher performance and greater competitiveness.
Filtration challenge
The company asked us to define a filtration system downstream of an activated-carbon treatment. The objective was to ensure the absence of fine carbon particles in the finished product prior to filling.
The fluid to be filtered is an organic diol, with a viscosity of around 50 cP at ambient temperature, and a flow rate between 500 and 1,000 kg/h.
Pemflow filtration solution
To achieve the performance required by our client, two filtration stages were necessary: the first to retain the majority of contaminants, and the second to eliminate the remaining particles as a safety filtration step prior to filling.
The installation therefore consists of:
- Two high-capacity bag filters, and
- Eight cartridge filters for each filling point.
Bag filter
The two bag filters are installed in parallel and operate alternately to maintain continuous production.
The design of these bag filters offers a key advantage for this application: very high capacity. Unlike the standard 50 L design, these filters have a capacity of 90 L, perfectly suited to the client’s production requirements.
In the implemented configuration, the following features were specified:
- 316L stainless-steel housing
- Maximum temperature from −10 to 100 °C
- DN40 PN16 inlet/outlet with EN1092-1 flanges
- ½-inch female gas vent & drain
- Opening and closing via swing bolts
- Floor-mounted
- Compliant with Directive 2014/68/EU, liquid group 1
Additionally, we supplied 3.1 material certificates and a non-static certificate.

Good to know
The non-static certificate is issued following verification of zero resistivity through the filter housing.
The filter media for this application is a polypropylene-felt bag with a 10 µm filtration threshold, equipped on the open side with a 316L stainless-steel O-ring.
Cartridge filter
At each filling point, it was necessary to ensure the absence of carbon fines in the finished product.
Eight AMAZON FILTERS cartridge filters were supplied to cover all filling points.
- 316L stainless-steel construction
- Single-cartridge housing, 1 × 20-inch, with double O-rings and bayonet locking
- Maximum temperature: 110 °C
- Operating pressure: 10 bar
- DN25 PN16 inlet/outlet with EN1092-1 flanges
- ¼-inch BSPF drain
- Vent: dual ¼-inch BSPF ports for differential-pressure monitoring
- Electropolished finish
- FEP-encapsulated Viton gasket
Supply of material certificates, surface-finish certificate, and certificate of conformity

SupaSpun II cartridge
These high-performance cartridges offer high retention capacity and very low pressure drop, resulting from the tightly controlled manufacturing of the matrix fibers.
- 100% polypropylene media (FDA)
- Core, cages, and endcaps made of 100% pure polypropylene (FDA)
- Double O-rings and bayonet locking
- FEP-encapsulated Viton gaskets
- 1 µm absolute filtration threshold

Expert advice
When maximum efficiency in the retention of carbon fines is required, an “absolute” efficiency is necessary. The term absolute refers to a filter element whose efficiency at the stated threshold (here, 1 µm) is greater than 99.98%.
