Company context

Since 1954, the company has been developing its activity in the manufacture and sale of lubricant additives. It supplies additives for engine oils and other transportation fluids, additives and fluids for industrial lubricants, as well as additives for gasoline and diesel fuel. With several production sites in France, the company is the main foreign subsidiary of an American group.

Filtration challenge

The discontinuation of the filter cartridges used by our client forced them to seek an alternative solution for the filtration process of a fuel additive.

This issue involved two aspects to be considered when proposing a solution:

  • The presence of solvents such as toluene, dichloromethane, isooctane, as well as halogenated solvents
  • Variable viscosities, depending on the nature of the additive and its carbon chain

On average, the viscosity was 10,000 cP at 20°C.

Expert advice

Viscosity is the characteristic of a fluid that resists separation forces and motion. This parameter is closely linked to the concepts of pressure drop and energy dissipation.

It is therefore essential to know the viscosity of the fluid to be filtered in order to correctly size the equipment to be implemented.

Pemflow filtration solution

The filtration system operates in “ducking” mode until a compliant spot test is obtained: a visual inspection on a white disc on which no particles must be present. Once the spot is deemed “clean”, our client releases the batch for packaging.

To meet this requirement, we selected the VisClear II cartridge (second generation of this product) from AMAZON FILTERS.

This filter cartridge was specifically designed for use in chemical processing and industrial liquid coatings. It provides controlled performance and minimal fibre shedding, an absolute requirement in the field of high-technology chemistry.

VisClear II

The structure is ideal for high-temperature and high-viscosity applications.
Prior to the industrialisation phase, we carried out VisClear II trials on the most viscous product. The fluid is processed at 150°C to reduce viscosity, then undergoes a cooling phase to 120°C before being filtered using our filtration cartridge.

VisClear II cartridges are manufactured using a unique production process.

The trials confirmed that the VisClear II cartridge fully meets our client’s expectations. Thirteen batches of 3 tonnes were produced, matching the output achieved with the previously used filter. Our filtration cartridge is now validated for the industrial phase.
