Industry sector: production of ice for food or refrigeration uses
Company activity: manufacture of cooling solutions (ice cubes, crushed ice, dry ice…)
Company type: very small enterprise
Company founding period: 1960s
Contact: quality manager
Company context
This customer manufactures and distributes ice cubes and crushed ice packaged for consumers or for professionals in the restaurant, retail, events, and refrigerated-transport sectors. This food-grade ice is produced from municipal water, according to very strict standards and specifications, in facilities approved by the D.D.A.S.S. The company regularly performs physico-chemical tests to ensure full compliance with acceptability criteria.
Filtration challenge
Despite the great care taken in its production, the customer faced turbidity issues in the crushed ice made in its plant from drinking water. This cloudiness and slight coloration did not compromise the potability of the ice, but the company wanted to offer its customers perfectly transparent ice, more aesthetic and with no taste. It therefore sought to implement a suitable filtration solution to remove the suspended particles responsible for the turbidity.
Pemflow filtration solution

We recommended installing a set of filtration devices between the municipal drinking-water network and the water circuit used to produce the ice, in order to trap suspended organic and inorganic particles. This filtration train consists of two parallel units, each performing three filtration steps in cascade:
- a first water filtration (20″) with a 5 µm retention rating to capture the largest particles
- a second filtration using a 20″ activated carbon cartridge, to retain organic and chlorinated compounds
- a final filtration with a 1 µm rating, to retain the remaining fine particles and the carbon fines released by the second filter
Expert advice
To remove colored impurities, activated carbon is used. Made from porous carbon-based material that adsorbs unwanted molecules, it purifies and decolors filtered liquids. Activated carbon can be added directly into the circuit before being filtered or, preferably, used as a dedicated filtration media.
The system successfully eliminated the varying degrees of coloration linked to water quality and produced perfectly transparent ice.
