EDI water filtration: which solutions?

20 October 2020

Industry sector: Manufacture of scientific and technical instrumentation (NAF 2008: 2651B)
Company activity: Our client is a division of an international group; a recognized technological leader in nanosystems and microsystems.
Company type: International group
Year of establishment: 1997
Contact person(s): Equipment & Maintenance Technician

Company context

The company serves high-growth markets driven by the increasing miniaturization of electronic devices. It provides custom and standard MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) products, particularly for the industrial, aerospace, security, and medical sectors. Production takes place at two sites, one in France and one in the USA. Primarily composed of scientists and engineers, the company employs around 100 staff members.

Filtration challenge

Our client has implemented an EDI water production system, essential for their manufacturing process. The system had the drawback of inconsistent supply of filter cartridges, requiring multiple contacts to procure the filter elements and associated traceability and compliance documentation. To improve costs and maintenance times, the client sought a single supplier capable of meeting all their requirements.

Expert advice

EDI water unit: An Electrodeionization (EDI) unit is typically installed after a reverse osmosis (RO) system to further demineralize the water and achieve very low conductivity (< 1 µS).

Pemflow filtration solution

The AMAZON FILTERS/Pemflow partnership fully meets the needs of companies seeking both technical solutions and support services for the daily management of water production installations, all through a single point of contact.

This EDI water production system consists of multiple filtration stages:

  • First stage: 10 µm filtration
  • Second stage: 1 µm filtration
  • Third stage: dual-function depth cartridge with activated carbon

We selected AMAZON FILTERS SupaPleat Plus cartridges for absolute-depth filtration at 1 µm and 10 µm ratings.

The 03PB version of the SupaPleat Plus cartridges features:

  • 100% polypropylene media
  • FDA-certified
  • Food-contact compliant
  • Beta 5000

Our thermal welding process seals all components, eliminating adhesives and extractable substances, and ensures cartridge integrity. All filter cartridges are individually packed in antistatic bags.

For this application, it is essential to reduce chlorine, odor, color, and organic traces. To achieve this, we chose the SupaPleat Plus cartridge. chlore, d’odeur, de couleur et de traces d’organiques. Pour ce faire, nous avons fait le choix de la cartouche SupaCarb d’AMAZON FILTERS.

The Activated Carbon Depth Cartridge is made from a compacted block of powdered and granular carbon, using FDA-certified materials.

This provides a large contact surface, ensuring excellent chlorine reduction.

A 5 µm gradient-density prefilter layer protects the carbon media.

These cartridges can be sanitized and steam-sterilized.

In the management and supply of pure water for production, it is also crucial to eliminate bacteria (providing sterile water).

The suitable AMAZON FILTERS product for this purpose is the SupaPore VP cartridge – a pleated membrane cartridge, biological grade:

  • Naturally hydrophilic PES membrane
  • Bacterial retention LRV > 11
  • FDA-compliant materials
  • Food-contact compliant

All filter cartridges are thermally welded, containing no adhesives. Each unit is pre-rinsed with ultrapure water and undergoes an integrity test before final assembly.

Expert advice

In many filtration applications for the production of ultrapure water in the electronics market, it is necessary to use electronic-grade filter cartridges, where the conductivity must be below 1 µS/cm. Conductivity is the reciprocal of resistivity. For water purification systems, conductivity is typically reported in microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) at 25 °C.

Our technical solutions, services, and support in the upgrade and standardization of our client’s installations enable a long-term relationship, while keeping a close watch on procurement and maintenance costs. Today, we also supply air filtration media of types G, F, and HEPA.
