Chemical solvent filtration: designing a filtration system that meets a given specification

22 August 2018

Industry sector: Chemical industry
Company activity: Manufacturing of formulated hygiene and disinfection products for the food industry and public authorities; wholesale of chemical products
Company type: Mid-sized company
Company founded: 1920s
Contacts: Operations manager and QHSSE coordinator (quality, hygiene, safety, security, environment) – technical director of the head office – managing director of the engineering firm responsible for defining the technical specifications for the company

Company context

The company uses filtration processes on the various chemical products it sells at the final stage—just before packaging and delivery to end customers—in order to prevent any form of contamination.

Filtration challenge

The client wanted to upgrade an existing filtration system that had become outdated. The engineering firm supporting them provided Pemflow with a specification sheet for the solvent filtration system, including the following operating data and conditions:

Compatibility required with the following solvents: white spirit D40/0.5%, white spirit D60, xylene, acetone, methyl alcohol, 99% extra-pure ethyl alcohol, naphtha solvent 90/170, toluene, isobutyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, butyl glycol, ethyl acetate, methoxypropanol, methoxy-propoxypropanol, methoxypropyl acetate, isobutyl acetate and 70% isopropyl alcohol.

  • Flow rate: 30 m³/h
  • Maximum pressure: 10 bar
  • Temperature: ambient
  • Filtration threshold: 50 µm
  • ATEX zoning (explosive atmosphere): Zone 1
  • Compatibility required with the following solvents: white spirit D40/0.5%, white spirit D60, xylene, acetone, methyl alcohol, 99% extra-pure ethyl alcohol, naphtha solvent 90/170, toluene, isobutyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, butyl glycol, ethyl acetate, methoxypropanol, methoxy-propoxypropanol, methoxypropyl acetate, isobutyl acetate and 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Pemflow filtration solution

To meet these requirements, we recommended implementing the following filtration system:

  • Size 2 bag filter (for a flow rate of 30 m³/h) with magnetic rod to capture particles originating from metallic components of the installation
  • PP bag with stainless steel ring, compatible with the various chemical solvents, with a 50 µm filtration threshold
  • Flat lid closure with swing bolts to improve workstation ergonomics
  • 2″ flat BS4504 PN16 flanged inlet/outlet connections (as required in the specification)
  • Support stand, as the filter was mounted on a mobile platform
  • Drain valve kit

The client, fully satisfied, selected Pemflow to supply filter bags for their entire filtration installation.
