Can a filter cartridge be replaced without cleaning the housing?

Can a filter cartridge be replaced without cleaning the housing?

21 March 2022

A complete overview of the issue

In industries where hazardous materials must be filtered, protecting the operator and ensuring the safety of the working environment are ongoing challenges. The replacement phases of filtration devices are therefore particularly critical: opening the housing, removing the used cartridge, thorough cleaning of the housing, installing the new cartridge

A step that is often long and delicate!

In other sectors that use paints and coatings, such as the automotive industry, this maintenance phase also represents a real challenge; in this case, the main issue is avoiding cross-contamination between different products.

Yet, an alternative solution exists.

In summary

The Supaclean cartridge is:

  • one or more conventional cartridges enclosed in two sealed antistatic plastic bags
  • a ready-to-use system
  • clean and safe filtration for operators
  • a means to prevent cross-contamination
  • a practical and cost-effective solution
  • numerous applications: production of hazardous chemicals, manufacturing and use of paints, coatings, and inks

Pemflow solutions

To meet this need, Sofise, in partnership with the manufacturer AMAZON FILTERS, designed an ingenious system consisting of enclosing one or more cartridges in two sealed antistatic polyethylene bags. The filtration pack is delivered to the customer and installed in the usual manner in a 316 stainless steel housing. It is recommended to carry out upstream tests to ensure that the plastic bags enclosing the cartridges remain in place once filled with liquid, and to carefully check the tightness of the system at each filter replacement.

To be used with a wide range of filter cartridges with nominal or absolute ratings, without the need to modify the entire existing filtration system, this solution can be custom-designed.

As polyethylene withstands temperatures of up to 70°C and a differential pressure of up to 1.5 bar, this system can be used on many installations.

Key advantages include:

Optimal protection of operators and the workstation: containment is total, for both the filter and the filtered product. There is therefore no risk of exposure or contamination.

Elimination of the cleaning step, as the plastic bags surrounding the system prevent the b from being in contact with the filter housing. This is particularly useful in multi-product operations (paints, inks and coatings, for example), where, with a conventional filtration system, solvents are required to clean the filter housing.

The ability to easily retain reusable filters. The bags surrounding the filter cartridges make it easy to store the filters if they are to be reinstalled later on the production line. This is the case, for example, in installations producing different ink colors in small batches. If filters contaminated by one color cannot be used for other colors, they can be labeled and stored for future reuse.

Finally, overall, a reduction in risks and maintenance costs.
