Company context
Our customer is a French company that, for more than 30 years, has been investing significant resources in research and development to design, manufacture, and market medical devices for ophthalmologists. The company systematically involves expert surgeons in the development of its new products, which it aims to make increasingly innovative to treat tearing, dry eye, as well as various palpebral, orbital, and retinal pathologies.
Filtration challenge
The recently installed filtration configuration did not meet the customer’s expectations regarding the industrial air quality required for their needs and specifications. Too many particles were present in the air, particularly when the operating pressure was increased above 2.5 bar.
This unsatisfactory experience led us to propose a reliable filtration solution in order to guarantee the achievement of the required quality objectives for our customer.
Pemflow filtration solution
The proposed filtration sequence consists of three stages.
The first stage involves installing a cyclonic separator with a capacitive drain at the compressor outlet to filter particles as well as residual water and oil.
The second stage consists of a series of filters, located upstream and downstream of the dryer.

Expert advice
It is important to protect the dryer from oily emulsions by using a filter, for example a coalescing filter. If oily aerosols enter the desiccant dryer, they quickly coat the heat exchanger tubing, which disrupts flow and impairs its cooling capacity.
All components meet FDA requirements for food contact in accordance with CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Title 21 and EC / 1935/2004 requirements.
Finally, the third stage consists of installing a safety filtration at each point of use.

This final sterilizing filtration stage is designed around a Series 51 filter housing from AMAZON FILTERS and a pleated membrane cartridge from the same manufacturer:
- Hydrophobic PTFE membrane
- Filtration rating of 0.02 µm in gas (0.2 µm in liquid)
- Polypropylene support
- Validated by bacterial and aerosol challenge testing
- Compliant with US FDA CFR Title 21 requirements
- Testable
Expert advice
Sterile filter housings are available in various standard sizes, covering a wide range of flow rates (typically from a few m3/h to several hundred m3/h for single-element housings, and up to several thousand m3/h for multi-element housings).
The results of this new filtration configuration proved to be in line with our customer’s expectations.
