Company context
The company’s site is the leading European centre in the hydrocarbon resins and polymers market. The products manufactured serve as raw materials for numerous everyday products, notably in food packaging, electronics, medical applications, and automotive industries.
Filtration challenge
The company filters resins, based on solvents (70 to 80% MTBE or toluene), in order to remove coarse residues and agglomerates.
Our client wished to optimise the service life of its filtration consumables. The service life of its traditional flexible bags ranged between 2 and 4 hours of production. Trials with W-type bags, followed by pleated depth cartridges, did not allow a service life exceeding 24 hours.
The Production Manager consulted us to consider an alternative solution capable of significantly increasing the service life of filtration consumables and thus drastically reducing maintenance operations.
Pemflow filtration solution
To address this issue, we proposed a filtration consumable combining both the advantages of cartridge filters with the ease of use of bag filter systems.
It was important to take into account two constraints of the installation:
- No change to the filter housing
- No requalification of the process
We selected a size 1 pleated rigid bag, offering a high-performance filter media.
Expert advice
The pleated depth polypropylene media increases the filtration surface area, offering the advantages of a higher flow rate and a significantly longer service life compared with traditional flexible bag filter technology.

In our client’s application, we supplied pleated rigid bags according to the following technical data:
- Filtration rating of 50 µm
- Flange Ø177 mm
- Size 1 providing a filtration surface area of 3 m², compared with 0.25 m² for a conventional flexible bag
- EPDM seal
In conclusion, this rigid bag technology made it possible to increase service life from a few hours to 5–7 days.
