Which cartridge for the filtration of gaseous ammonia?

28 January 2021

Industry sector: Agrochemicals – Manufacture of nitrogen products and fertilisers (NAF 2008 Code: 2015Z)
Company activity: The company designs, manufactures and markets industrial fertilisers, mainly nitrogen-based and multi-ingredient fertilisers, in both solid and liquid forms.

The application context required that all filtration components be made of 316L stainless steel, including both the filter elements and the filter housing.

Our choice focused on pleated filter cartridges made of sintered metal fibre. Indeed, the excellent mechanical strength provided by this type of product allows it to withstand deterioration in critical applications of this kind.

Filtration challenge

During the construction and commissioning of the nitric acid production line, it was necessary to install a filtration system, integrated directly into the process, to purify the air, filter gaseous ammonia, as well as dilute nitric acid.

User requirements called for a thorough analysis of operating conditions, as well as particular attention to the materials of the filters and filter housings.

Expert advice

These filter elements make it possible, among other things, to meet your filtration requirements under extreme temperature, pressure and corrosion conditions, particularly for the following applications:

Industrial processes

Polymer melt filtration

Catalyst recovery

Fine chemicals, chemical and petrochemical production

Powder liquefaction, mixing and solids handling

Pemflow filtration solution

Manufactured from randomly layered and sintered metal fibres to form a uniform and highly porous filtration medium, the filter cartridges exhibit a significantly low pressure drop, high permeability, and an excellent contaminant retention capacity.

The filter cartridges are manufactured as standard in 316L stainless steel. They provide a filtration surface area of 0.13 m² for a length of 25 cm.

The filter media and support meshes are plasma welded or TIG welded. The support core and end caps are fully TIG welded. This manufacturing method guarantees the integrity of the filter cartridge by eliminating the risk of bypass and the presence of extractables originating from bonding agents.

The construction method and the materials used are suitable for temperatures ranging from -269°C to 1000°C and for a differential pressure of up to 25 bar in the normal flow direction.
