Company context

The company specializes in manufacturing polyamide intermediates used primarily in plastics, industrial fibers, and high-performance coatings across numerous sectors such as automotive, textiles, household equipment, and consumer goods.

With one third of global production (500,000 tonnes per year) of adiponitrile—a chemical compound in the form of a colorless, viscous liquid—our client is a key player in nylon 6.6 chemistry.

Filtration challenge

The company faced a supply issue involving a type of filter cartridge with a stainless-steel core, essential for ensuring continuous process operation. The current supplier was unable to deliver the required liquid filtration consumables for 8 to 10 weeks.

Expert advice

Using cartridges with a 316L stainless-steel core ensures product strength, durability, and complete structural integrity, prevents corrosion, and protects the element under high differential pressure.

The company, forced to seek an alternative solution, consulted us so that we could propose a technical equivalent compatible with its constraints and operating conditions — with a procurement lead time acceptable given the urgency.

Pemflow filtration solution

The technical solution

  1. Depth-wound cartridge: A single fiber strand is wound around a perforated metal core.
  2. The winding technique optimizes dirt-holding capacity and provides a density gradient throughout the cartridge structure.
  3. Filter media: fiberglass, filtration rating of 100 µm, double open ends. Compatible with all standard filter housings. ISO 9001–certified Quality System (individual identification, batch-number traceability).
  4. 316L stainless-steel core: 30-inch length, maximum operating temperature between 60 & 400 °C. Recommended change-out ΔP: 1.5 bar. Maximum differential pressure: 4 bar at 20 °C, 3 bar at 50 °C, and 1 bar at 80 °C.

Logistical solution

Once our technical solution—equivalent to the filter cartridges previously used—was validated by the client, we mobilized our factory to supply 500 filtration cartridges in two deliveries:

  • 250 filter cartridges within 10 working days
  • Then 250 filter cartridges within 15 working days
Expert advice

Depth-wound cartridges are manufactured from a high-quality continuous strand wound around a cylindrical central support. The winding pattern is designed to create tapered flow passages, and during production the fibers are interlocked through successive layers. These passages provide progressive filtration toward the center of the cartridge.

Our responsiveness in addressing the client’s need, along with our ability to supply the filter cartridges within a timeframe compatible with process continuity, fully satisfied our client.

We were thus able to demonstrate our technical expertise, responsiveness, and agility in a complex and urgent situation.

In addition, maintaining dedicated storage space within Pemflow for essential consumables that optimize production further reinforces our added value.
