Company context

With eight research laboratories, eleven production sites, and nine logistics platforms, the company designs and manufactures high-end professional decorative paints and distributes its innovative products in more than 50 countries worldwide. Constantly aiming for the highest quality standards, down to the smallest detail, the company relies on filtration systems to achieve 100% customer satisfaction.

Filtration challenge

During the manufacture of water-based paints, our client observed the presence of agglomerates in the form of skins, grains, or particles—an issue incompatible with its quality standards. A filtration system was therefore implemented prior to filling. Filtration was ensured by stainless-steel filter baskets with electro-cut mesh, with a retention threshold of 200 µm or 100 µm depending on quality requirements.

With this type of filter media, the client noticed abnormal wear on the baskets (deformation, damaged media). Various mechanical factors can explain this premature wear, particularly the pig-tail agitator conveying the paint. The client was therefore seeking an alternative to electro-cut sheet metal, with increased robustness to extend the service life of the filter baskets and reduce operating costs.

Pemflow filtration solution

The objective being to increase the mechanical strength of the filter baskets and therefore extend their service life, we proposed a redesign of the baskets. The technology we recommended is a basket construction based on a triangular-mesh filtration profile.

This technology, which Pemflow commonly uses in paint filtration, preserves—at minimum—the filtration safety required by our client’s quality criteria. The solid construction of this type of design also meets the robustness expected in this type of process, where mechanical stresses are high.

Triangular profiles offer the following characteristics compared with a perforated-plate screen:

  • Greater mechanical rigidity
  • Higher resistance to abrasion and vibration
  • Ability to withstand higher pressure and temperature
  • Extended service life
  • Larger effective surface area than a standard screen

The Pemflow solution fully meets the filtration quality requirements prior to filling. Users are satisfied and have reduced the frequency of filter basket replacement. Our client is now considering using this technology in other filtration processes.
