Company context

A specialist in contract packaging, formulation, and large-volume logistics for a wide range of sectors (petrochemicals, agri-food, chemicals, hazardous products, intermediate chemistry, e-liquids, special fuels, greases and lubricants, paint, inks and dyes, cleaning products, automotive), the company supports its clients through an integrated approach aimed at delivering a tailor-made solution that includes a customized study, the execution of formulations and blends, filling into drums, mini-containers or tanks, management of upstream and downstream flows and supplies, all the way through to on-site delivery. It also performs filtration operations from one container to another.

Filtration challenge

To meet its customers’ Quality requirements, our client needed to transfer 26 tonnes of product (Hallcomid) from a road tanker into 26 IBC tanks. However, the company detected the presence of fine particles—amounting to 20 kg—after laboratory centrifugation. Consequently, a clarification filtration operation became necessary.

The client conducted filtration trials using filter bags with a 1 µm retention threshold. However, the post-filtration result was non-compliant: the product remained cloudy and did not meet the expected quality specifications. The company approached us with this issue, seeking to rent a filtration unit for this one-off filtration operation.

Pemflow filtration solution

Given the unloading flow rate of 2 to 3 m³/h, we proposed renting a 316 stainless-steel filter housing equipped with three 20-inch cartridges, with an absolute filtration threshold of 0.2 µm for particulate removal. Our choice focused on an AMAZON FILTER pleated depth filter cartridge of the SupaPore type, with an absolute Beta ratio of 5000, in order to eliminate the product’s turbidity.

These pleated filtration cartridges offer excellent retention capacity and high filtration efficiency, making them an ideal solution for liquid processes in the chemical industry. Our client appreciated the large filtration surface, which provides high flow rates and low pressure drops, as well as the wide chemical compatibility ensured by the 100% FDA polypropylene construction.

The characteristics of the filter cartridges are as follows:

  • 100% FDA polypropylene construction
  • 0.2 µm absolute filtration threshold
  • 20-inch length
  • Code 8 connection, equipped with Viton gaskets (requested by our client due to the type of liquid being filtered)
  • Pleated depth media

To accommodate the three absolute pleated depth filter cartridges, we selected the Amazon Filters Series 61 multi-cartridge housing in 316 stainless steel. These units are designed for floor installation. The top opening is fitted with a molded V-clamp with a “W” gasket for improved sealing. Sealing at the filter cartridges is likewise ensured by a PTFE washer located at the compression plate. All our housings comply with ATEX 94/9/EC, CE Ex II 2 GD cX level.

Our understanding of the issue encountered by our client, our responsiveness in providing a rental solution, and our ability to propose an effective filtration solution ensured full satisfaction for both the service provider and the end customer.
