Company context

The company produces steel wire coils by rolling ferritic or austenitic stainless steel plates.
To limit wear on the rolling mill cylinders, extend their service life and ensure the quality of the rolled product, closed-loop lubrication oils are used. These oils must be continuously filtered.

The goal of filtration is to maintain the cleanliness class of the processed oil at its original level (that of the new oil) — or, ideally, to produce an oil of even higher quality by reducing particulate contamination.

Filtration challenge

Filtration of the lubricating oils is ensured using custom-made filter elements, sized to match the installation and equipped with specific mounting fittings. Filtration must be carried out continuously and consistently while the rolling mill is in operation.

However, standard filters need to be replaced more frequently than the rolling cylinders themselves, which is not acceptable in this context. The filters therefore need to be custom-built to provide sufficient service life.

Additionally, the client also wanted filters with lower filtration thresholds to anticipate future quality requirements from major contractors, particularly regarding surface finish improvements (reducing surface roughness).

Pemflow filtration solution

To meet the client’s requirements, Pemflow worked in collaboration with one of its filtration element manufacturing partners. A preliminary study (dimensions, structure, porosity, etc.) confirmed it would be possible to produce filters with at least the same service life as the existing ones.

The production equipment was then adapted, and a specific mould was developed to manufacture the new filter fittings. The produced elements were subsequently tested and validated in situ on the various rolling lines of the production chain.

Finally, thanks to our partner’s expertise in extrusion-blow manufacturing (meltblown filters), we developed filters with lower filtration thresholds, without significantly impacting productivity or production costs.
